How the solar savings calculator works

The calculator estimates the size of solar PV system that suits your electricity use, then works out how much you could save each year from two things: the grid electricity you no longer buy (because your panels power your home directly), and the Smart Export Guarantee payments you earn for exporting surplus energy. It then compares that yearly benefit against a typical installed cost to estimate your payback time.

South-facing roofs generate the most, and homes that use more electricity during daylight hours save the most — though adding a solar battery lets you store daytime generation to use in the evening, which increases savings further.
