WHAT ARE SOLAR BATTERIES?

Solar battery storage is an innovative technology that allows homeowners to store excess energy generated by their solar panels during the day for use later on. This means that even when the sun goes down, you can still power your home with clean, renewable energy.

With a modern solar battery storage system, your home can automatically switch to stored energy when there isn’t enough daylight available. This ensures that you always have access to electricity, even during power outages or grid failures.

Make the most of your solar panels and enjoy clean, renewable energy around the clock.

THE BENEFITS OF HAVING A SOLAR BATTERY STORAGE SYSTEM

ENJOY POWER DAY AND NIGHT

Solar panels without a solar battery system are only useful during the day. Choose a solar battery, though, and you’ll be powered day and night, meaning less reliance on traditional energy sources, and more benefits coming your way.

THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE INSTALLING A SOLAR BATTERY SYSTEM

  • EXPENSE -We’ll talk more about solar battery prices in greater depth below, but for now it’s worth noting that solar batteries aren’t cheap. As a result, it can be off putting to some, but it’s worth considering the additional benefits and savings a solar battery will bring your way, too.
  • MAINTENANCE – As with solar panels themselves, a solar battery will require maintenance throughout its life in order to extend its usefulness. This can be carried out by you, if you know what you’re doing, but in most cases you’ll need to pay for maintenance services from a solar company.
  • CAPACITY – This is, perhaps, the single most important thing to consider before buying a solar battery for your solar array. It’s vital that you choose a battery that’s right for your solar PV system. Too small and you won’t store all the energy your solar panels are producing. Too big and you’ll be spending more on a battery you don’t really need.

What Is Solar Battery Storage?

During sunlight hours, most domestic solar panels generate more electricity than the home needs. Solar batteries store this excess energy for use later on. With a modern solar battery storage system, your home automatically switches to stored energy when there isn’t enough daylight.

Solar battery storage systems hold the excess electricity that is produced by solar panels during the day. Modern solar batteries look neat, high-tech, and stylish. We are happy to show you what it would look like, and explain where it would be installed on your property.

IS A SOLAR BATTERY RIGHT FOR ME?

Now that you’ve considered the benefits and drawbacks of a solar panel battery installation, only you can really decide if a solar battery would benefit you. Of course, if you’re looking to save money long term, make your solar panels more efficient and improve your energy security, then a solar battery just makes sense.

If you’re still unsure, contact us today and we’ll be able to provide you with a free, no-obligation, competitive quote for a solar battery – whether it’s part of a larger, brand new solar PV system or an addition to an older one. Perhaps our competitive quote and ability to complete a remote survey (where applicable) will provide you with the additional information to make your mind up either way.

WHAT BATTERIES ARE BEST FOR SOLAR PANELS?

DES Renewable Energy offers a range of solar batteries for you to choose from, and each type offers a range of unique advantages and disadvantages.

LITHIUM-ION

Lithium-ion batteries are the new kid on the block in the solar battery space, but they bring a host of upgrades that make them a favourable option for most modern homes and businesses.

Even the smallest of lithium-ion batteries can hold a huge amount of power, making them a great choice for those with limited space to store a solar battery. They have superior performance in most cases, but they’re also the most expensive option in most cases, too.

LEAD-ACID

From the new kid to the old hand, lead-acid batteries have been the industry standard for solar batteries for years, so they’re certainly reliable and still remain the most popular choice, especially when installing solar batteries as part of a commercial solar installation.

They require little maintenance, are cost-effective, and are durable devices, but in order to get the most out of them, lead-acid solar batteries tend to be HUGE when more solar battery storage is needed.

NICKEL-CADMIUM

Nickel-cadmium solar batteries are unique in their ability to withstand the most extreme temperatures, meaning they’re incredibly durable and can be installed almost anywhere in the country without fear of the cold impacting them negatively.

They’re an efficient and cost-effective solar battery, but are generally suited to commercial solar installations. Why? Because cadmium is toxic, and their disposal needs to be properly handled, making it easier to install them at commercial premises where more regulations are in place than at home.

FLOW

A flow battery depends on chemical reactions to work, where electrolytes ‘flow’ between two chambers in the container. They’re an exciting solar battery because very little of the stored capacity is lost during operation, making them the most efficient battery by far.

With that said, they’re huge and can be quite a large expense, making them impractical for many households.

SOLAR BATTERY PRICE UK

The price you’ll pay for your solar battery will depend on two key factors:

  • Battery type: Lead-acid batteries are generally cheaper, for example
  • Battery size: The bigger your battery, the more you’ll pay

But the average solar battery price ranges from around £2,500 for the smallest batteries (4kWh), £4,500 for an average solar battery size (5kWh), and £8,000 for larger domestic batteries (10kWh). Commercial solar batteries will usually range somewhere between £12,000 and £40,000 (13.5kWh+).

Remember, these are average prices. As soon as we know more about your requirements, we’ll be able to give you an accurate solar battery quote.

Absolutely, solar panels are still a useful investment even without battery storage.

While solar panels without a battery can’t store excess energy for use later on, they can still help you save money on your electricity bills and reduce your carbon footprint. Adding a battery storage system to your solar panel setup simply extends their usefulness.

Solar batteries have slim profiles that make them easy to store in various locations such as garages, utility rooms, cabinets, or even outdoors. While most homeowners prefer to store their solar batteries in a neat and unobtrusive location, it is possible to showcase them as well.

The technology behind solar battery systems is advancing every day. We are here to make sure you select the latest system to get the most from your solar panels. We will help you:

  • Choose a solar battery with at least a 10-year warranty.
  • Check whether the battery system can run your home during a power cut.
  • Look at how much space is required for the system.
  • Understand your solar panels’ output and your usage needs.

The determination of the required storage capacity for your home is dependent on your current electricity consumption measured in kilowatt-hours. Your monthly energy bill provides insight into your monthly kilowatt-hour consumption.

DES Renewable Energy can calculate your energy requirements based on this value to determine the appropriate battery storage for your solar system and energy usage.

Yes! Retrofitting solar batteries to an already-established solar panel array is perfectly possible. Sometimes you may need a new inverter to make it possible, and in other cases it’s as simple as introducing the solar battery to the system. We’ll let you know how easy the job will be when we know more about your current solar array.

That depends on the amount of energy you use and the price of energy at the time of a comparison. On average, though, you’ll save around an additional £150-£200 per year with a solar battery installed, but this will vary per household.

Most solar batteries will last comfortably for 10-15 years, but could last longer with the proper care and maintenance.

If fitting to an already-established solar system, then a solar panel battery could be fitted in as little as 3 hours. If being fitted as part of a wider solar panel installation, then you can expect it to take 1-2 days.
