We installed this off-grid solar PV system for a customer in Copthorne, and they now enjoy complete energy independence.
The goal
The aim was a system that runs independently of the grid, with enough generation and storage to supply the property on its own.
What we installed
- 20 x Aiko 450W solar panels (9 kWp)
- 4 x Pylontech battery storage units
- 1 x Victron Energy 11.5kW inverter, isolated
- 1 x Victron Energy 10kW inverter
Why we designed it this way
Off-grid systems have no grid to fall back on, so the battery bank and inverters have to be sized for the property’s peak demand as well as its daily use. Victron inverters are widely used in off-grid systems for their reliability and control, and Pylontech batteries stack to build a larger bank.
Running two inverters gives the capacity to cover larger loads and keeps the system flexible.
How it works day to day
The panels charge the battery bank during the day and the inverters supply the property from the batteries. With no grid connection, the system is designed so the stored energy carries the property through the evening and overnight.
Questions homeowners ask about a system like this
Is off-grid right for most homes?
Usually not. For most homes, a grid-tied system with a battery and backup gives the same security with far less outlay. Off-grid suits properties where a grid connection is impractical or unwanted.
What happens in a long run of dull weather?
Off-grid systems are designed with this in mind, and some sites add a backup generator for extended dull spells.
