Gillingham — the Dorset one, with the hard G — sits in the flat, open floor of the Blackmore Vale, where the River Stour winds its way east towards Sturminster Newton. It is one of the fastest-growing towns in the county, and that growth has left it with something of a split personality: a compact old market town at the centre, ringed by large tracts of modern housing, and beyond that a wide belt of farmland, smallholdings and scattered hamlets. Why the Blackmore Vale suits solar
Dorset receives more annual sunshine than most of the UK, and Gillingham’s low, level setting works in its favour. Unlike towns built into a hillside or hemmed in by mature woodland, most of the Vale is open ground with long, uninterrupted sight lines to the southern sky. Shading — from neighbouring buildings, tall trees or terrain — is the single biggest thing that limits a solar array’s output, and it is simply less of a problem here than in many parts of the county.
