Hotels and wedding venues are among the most electricity-hungry buildings on any high street or country lane. Kitchens, cellars, laundries, air conditioning, lifts, function-room lighting and hot water all draw at once, and none of it can be quietly switched off when a rate goes up. That is exactly why solar panels for hotels and wedding venues tend to make an unusually strong commercial case: the demand is heavy, it is constant, and a large share of it happens in daylight.
Why a hotel’s energy profile suits solar
Solar pays best when the electricity is used on site rather than exported cheaply to the grid. Hospitality sites are close to a textbook fit for that.
Start with the kitchen. Walk-in fridges, freezers, cellar cooling and ice machines run twenty-four hours a day, and they work hardest on warm afternoons — precisely when an array is generating hardest. Extraction, warewashing and prep equipment then stack on top of that baseload from mid-morning onwards.
Housekeeping adds a second daytime block. Rooms are serviced between checkout and check-in, so laundry, hot water reheat and lifts all peak in the middle of the day. On sites with in-house laundry, that alone can be one of the largest single loads on the meter.
Then there is the guest side: air conditioning through summer, meeting-room AV and lighting, EV chargers in the car park, and pool or spa plant where you have it. Circulation pumps and pool heat pumps run for long, predictable daytime hours and reward on-site generation more than almost any other hospitality load.
Wedding venues have a slightly different but equally favourable shape. Your peak season is April to September, which is also your sunniest half of the year. Set-up, catering prep, cooling and turnaround all happen in daylight, with the evening event running on the tail of the day.
Roofs, listed buildings and keeping the view
Hotels and venues usually have more usable roof than they realise. Function-room extensions, kitchen and service blocks, annexes, stable conversions, garaging, outbuildings and flat-roofed rear elevations are frequently better solar surfaces than the main frontage — and are invisible from the drive, the lawn or the photographs.
That matters, because appearance is part of your product. A good design keeps panels off sightlines that guests and wedding photographers care about, and puts capacity where nobody looks.
Period and listed properties need more care rather than an automatic no. Listed status, conservation areas and protected landscapes change what is possible and how it is consented, so the sensible approach is to establish that at survey stage — before anyone designs a system that cannot be built.
Realistic savings and payback
For a system sized around genuine daytime consumption, a 40–70% reduction in electricity bills is typical, with payback usually falling in the three-to-five-year range. After that the array keeps producing for decades — panels installed today are generally warrantied to still be performing strongly at twenty-five years.
We size systems from your actual half-hourly consumption data, occupancy pattern and roof area, not from a rule of thumb. A 20-bedroom country house venue running eighty weddings a year has a very different profile from a town-centre hotel with a restaurant open to non-residents, and the design should reflect that.
Where battery storage earns its place
Hospitality is one of the sectors where storage genuinely changes the numbers. Your evening is busy: dinner service, function rooms, bar, lighting, hot water recovery and late laundry all run after generation has fallen away.
A battery banks surplus midday output and releases it into that evening peak instead of exporting it at a low rate. On venues with heavy weekend event loads and quieter weekdays, commercial battery storage also helps flatten the difference between the two.
No upfront cost: the fully funded route
Most operators would rather spend capital on rooms, kitchens or a new marquee lawn than on a roof. A fully funded arrangement removes that trade-off. A funder pays for the system and its installation, and you buy the electricity it generates through a power purchase agreement, typically at a rate below what you currently pay the grid. No capital outlay, and savings from the first month.
