A marina is really several energy-hungry businesses sharing one site: a berthing operation, a workshop, a hoist yard, usually a chandlery and a café, and increasingly an EV and electric-boat charging point. Every one of those loads draws power in daylight, and almost all of them peak in the months when the sun is strongest. That combination is why solar panels for marinas and boatyards stack up unusually well, and why coastal operators are among the businesses seeing the fastest returns on commercial solar.

Why a marina’s energy profile suits solar

Solar pays best when the electricity is used on site rather than exported cheaply to the grid. Marinas and boatyards are close to a textbook fit.

Start with the yard. Travel hoists and boat lifts, pressure washers, compressors, workshop machinery, extraction and spray booths all run during working hours — the same hours an array is producing. Lift-out and lift-in seasons concentrate that demand into busy blocks rather than spreading it thinly overnight.

Then there is shore power. Pedestals serving berth holders draw steadily through the day, and that draw is growing: liveaboards, larger onboard systems, electric and hybrid tenders and, in some marinas, electric boat charging. Whatever the metering arrangement with berth holders, the site itself is importing those units from the grid, and every unit generated on the roof is one fewer bought at commercial rates.

Add the buildings. Chandlery lighting and refrigeration, café catering and fridges, office IT, washrooms and showers, security lighting and CCTV. Refrigeration in particular never switches off, and its hardest work happens on hot afternoons — precisely when generation peaks.

The seasonal match is the part operators often underestimate. Your busiest, most power-hungry months are April to September. So are your sunniest. Unlike a factory with flat year-round demand, a marina’s load curve leans into the generation curve rather than fighting it.

Roofs, sheds and salt air

Boatyards tend to have exactly the roof space solar wants: large, simple spans over storage sheds, workshops, dry stacks and undercover repair bays, usually low-rise and unobstructed, with open southerly aspects and very little shading from surrounding buildings.

Coastal sites do need a design that respects the environment. Salt-laden air and wind exposure mean mounting systems, fixings and enclosures should be specified for marine conditions, and wind loading calculations matter more than they do inland. None of this rules out solar — it simply means the design should come from someone who has installed on coastal commercial sites before.

It is worth checking planning early, too. Most commercial rooftop solar is straightforward, but harbourside sites sometimes sit within conservation areas or protected landscapes, and designing with that in mind from the start avoids delays later.

Realistic savings and payback

For a commercial system sized around genuine daytime consumption, a 40–70% reduction in electricity bills is typical, with payback usually falling in the three-to-five-year range. After that the array keeps producing for decades — panels installed today are generally warrantied to still be performing strongly at 25 years.

Battery storage sharpens the case further on sites with long operating hours. A battery banks surplus midday generation and releases it in the evening, covering security lighting, refrigeration and shore power after the yard has closed, rather than exporting those units at a low rate.

We size systems from your actual half-hourly consumption data, opening hours and roof area — not from a rule of thumb. A yard with a travel hoist and a busy workshop has a very different profile from a berthing-only marina, and the design should reflect it.

No upfront cost: the fully funded route

Most marina operators would rather spend capital on pontoons, dredging or a new hoist than on a roof. A fully funded arrangement removes that trade-off. A funder pays for the system and its installation, and you buy the electricity it generates through a power purchase agreement (PPA), typically at a rate below what you currently pay the grid. No capital outlay, and savings from the first month.
