Newcastle Town FC: 21.64 kWp Solar & Battery, Newcastle-under-Lyme

How can we help?

Newcastle Town FC is a community football club based in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire. To reduce the running costs of its stadium and facilities, the club partnered with DES Renewable Energy to install a rooftop solar PV system with battery storage that generates clean electricity onsite, lowers energy bills and supports its long-term sustainability goals.

Project overview

Newcastle Town FC commissioned DES Renewable Energy to install a 21.64 kWp solar PV system across its stadium roof. The installation comprised 37 x 585 W Astronergy Astro N5 panels connected to a SolaX X3-ULT 30 kW inverter, paired with 30.6 kWh of SolaX HS51 battery storage. The project aimed to reduce electricity costs, lower carbon emissions and enhance long-term financial sustainability.

Project details

  • Company: Newcastle Town FC
  • Location: Lyme Valley Parkway Stadium, Lilleshall Road, Newcastle-under-Lyme, ST5 3BX
  • Solar system capacity: 21.64 kWp
  • Estimated annual generation: 17,789 kWh
  • Installation type: Pitched roof solar panels with battery storage
  • Project timeline: Delivered 2025, from survey to commissioning

The objectives

  • Reduce electricity costs and dependence on grid energy
  • Improve environmental sustainability by reducing the club’s carbon footprint
  • Achieve long-term operational savings and financial returns
  • Demonstrate responsible energy practices to members, visitors and the local community

The solution: bespoke assessment and design

DES Renewable Energy conducted a comprehensive assessment of roof space, structural considerations, sun exposure and interlocking constraints. This ensured optimal placement and system sizing to maximise energy production and long-term reliability.

The system was designed with 37 x 585 W Astronergy Astro N5 panels across the stadium roof, covering both trapezoidal and concrete tile sections. Power conversion is handled by a SolaX X3-ULT 30 kW inverter, paired with 30.6 kWh of SolaX HS51 battery storage to maximise self-consumption. The system integrates with the site’s existing electrical infrastructure for efficient energy management.

DES Renewable Energy ensured compliance with building regulations, electrical standards and industry best practices, obtaining all necessary permits and approvals for a fully compliant, safe installation.

Installation and completion

The installation was carried out with minimal disruption to the club’s day-to-day operations. Panels were securely mounted, connected to the inverter and integrated with the existing electrical system. Comprehensive testing and commissioning verified the system’s performance, functionality and safety. From initial assessment to completed commissioning, DES Renewable Energy provided a turnkey solution that ensures optimal energy generation, regulatory compliance and sustainable operational savings.

The results

  • Energy cost reduction: lower electricity bills and reduced reliance on grid energy
  • Environmental impact: an estimated 17,789 kWh of clean energy each year, saving an estimated 3.7 tonnes of CO2 annually
  • Financial returns: savings on energy costs contribute to long-term financial sustainability
  • Public image: demonstrates responsible energy practices to members, visitors and the local community
