H Barker & Sons is a mixed farming business at Moors Farm, Swinefleet, near Goole in East Yorkshire. To reduce operating costs and strengthen its environmental credentials, the family business partnered with DES Renewable Energy to install a rooftop solar PV system with battery storage that generates clean electricity onsite, lowers energy bills and supports its long-term sustainability goals.
Project overview
H Barker & Sons commissioned DES Renewable Energy to install a 55.8 kWp solar PV system across its agricultural building roof. The installation comprises 90 x 620 W Astronergy panels connected to a SolaX X3-MEGA 50 kW inverter, paired with 41.5 kWh of SolaX battery storage. The project aims to reduce electricity costs, lower carbon emissions and enhance long-term financial sustainability.
Project details
- Company: H Barker & Sons
- Location: Moors Farm, Oldlane Gate, Swinefleet, Goole, DN14 8DX
- Solar system capacity: 55.8 kWp
- Estimated annual generation: 53,010 kWh
- Installation type: Agricultural building roof solar panels with battery storage
- Project timeline: Currently at DNO connection stage, awaiting installation
The objectives
- Reduce electricity costs and dependence on grid energy
- Improve environmental sustainability by reducing the farm’s carbon footprint
- Achieve long-term operational savings and financial returns
- Demonstrate responsible energy practices to customers, staff and stakeholders
The solution: bespoke assessment and design
DES Renewable Energy conducted a comprehensive assessment of roof space, structural considerations, sun exposure and interlocking constraints. This ensured optimal placement and system sizing to maximise energy production and long-term reliability.
The system was designed with 90 x 620 W Astronergy panels across the agricultural building roof. Power conversion is handled by a SolaX X3-MEGA 50 kW inverter, paired with 41.5 kWh of SolaX battery storage to maximise self-consumption. The system integrates with the site’s existing electrical infrastructure for efficient energy management.
DES Renewable Energy ensures compliance with building regulations, electrical standards and industry best practices, obtaining all necessary permits and approvals for a fully compliant, safe installation.
Installation and completion
The project is currently at the DNO (Distribution Network Operator) connection stage, with installation to follow. The installation will be carried out with minimal disruption to day-to-day farm operations: panels will be securely mounted, connected to the inverter and integrated with the existing electrical system, with comprehensive testing and commissioning to verify the system’s performance, functionality and safety. From initial assessment to completed commissioning, DES Renewable Energy provides a turnkey solution that ensures optimal energy generation, regulatory compliance and sustainable operational savings.
The results
- Energy cost reduction: lower electricity bills and reduced reliance on grid energy
- Environmental impact: an estimated 53,010 kWh of clean energy each year, saving an estimated 11.0 tonnes of CO2 annually
- Financial returns: savings on energy costs contribute to long-term financial sustainability
- Public image: demonstrates responsible energy practices to customers, staff and stakeholders
