Once people have decided solar is right for their home, the next worry is usually a practical one: how long will the work actually take, and how disruptive is it going to be? The good news is that a standard home solar installation is quicker and tidier than most people expect. Here’s an honest, step-by-step look at what happens, so there are no surprises on the day.
The short answer: one to two days
For a typical home in Dorset, Hampshire or Wiltshire, the physical installation of solar panels takes one to two days. A straightforward system on an easy-to-access pitched roof is often done in a single day. Larger arrays, more complex roofs, or jobs that include a battery and EV charger tend to run into a second day. It’s the roof access, the wiring runs and the number of panels that drive the time — not the brand of panel you’ve chosen.
What takes longer is everything around the install: the survey beforehand and the paperwork afterwards. The day itself is usually the fastest part of the whole process.
Before the day: survey and scaffolding
No reputable installer should quote a firm design without surveying your roof first. A proper technical survey checks the roof structure, tile or slate type, rafter spacing, shading through the day, and where the inverter and any battery will live. Scaffolding almost always goes up a day or two before installation, because working safely at height is a legal requirement, not an optional extra. It may also stay up for a day or two after the panels are on. What actually happens on installation day
A DES installation team — our own employed engineers, not subcontractors — will usually arrive first thing. A typical day runs roughly like this:
- Set-up and safety checks. The team checks the scaffold, lays down protection, and confirms the plan for the day with you.
- Mounting the frame. Roof hooks or brackets are fixed to the rafters and the mounting rails go on. This is the part that keeps the array secure and weatherproof for decades, so it’s not rushed.
- Fitting the panels. The panels are lifted up, clamped to the rails and wired together. This is often the quickest visible stage.
- Inverter and battery. The inverter is mounted (commonly in a loft, garage or utility area) and connected. If you’re having battery storage fitted at the same time, this adds time but saves a second visit and second scaffold later.
- Electrical connection. The system is wired into your consumer unit with the correct isolators and protection. Expect your power to be off for a short period during this stage — usually an hour or two.
- Commissioning and testing. The team powers everything up, runs the safety and performance tests, and sets up your monitoring app so you can see what the system is generating.
Before they leave, the team should walk you through how the system works, how to read your monitoring, and what (very little) you need to do to look after it.
Do you need to be home, and how messy is it?
You don’t need to be present for the whole day, but someone should be there at the start to give access and at the end for the handover, and around the point where the power is switched off. Most of the noise and mess is outside on the scaffold. Indoors, the main activity is around the inverter location and your consumer unit. A good team tidies up and takes the packaging away with them.
The paperwork: DNO notification and your MCS certificate
Two bits of paperwork matter after the panels are on. The first is notifying your Distribution Network Operator (DNO), the company that runs the local grid. For most homes with a system of 3.68kW per phase or under, this is a simple notification your installer submits within 28 days — there’s no waiting around and no need for approval before switch-on. Larger systems need approval before installation, which the DNO can take several weeks to grant, so it’s worth factoring that in early if you’re planning a bigger array.
The second is your MCS certificate. Being MCS certified means DES can issue the paperwork that proves the install meets the recognised standard — and you’ll need that certificate to apply for the Smart Export Guarantee and get paid for the electricity you export. It’s usually issued within a couple of weeks of the install.
When it might take longer
Some jobs genuinely need more time, and it’s better to know that upfront: older or fragile roofs, difficult access, three-phase supplies, larger battery set-ups, or a consumer unit that needs upgrading first.
