Funded Commercial Solar & PPAs: Solar With No Upfront Cost

The biggest thing that stops businesses going solar isn’t doubt about the savings — it’s the upfront capital. Funded solar removes that barrier entirely. With a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) or funded model, your business can get solar installed with little or no upfront cost and start saving from day one. Here’s how it works and whether it’s right for you.

What is a solar PPA?

Under a Power Purchase Agreement, a funder pays for and owns the solar system installed on your roof or land. You simply buy the electricity it generates — typically at a rate lower than the grid — under a long-term agreement. You get cheaper, greener power without the capital outlay; the funder earns a return over time.

The benefits for your business

  • No (or low) upfront cost — the capital barrier disappears.
  • Immediate savings — you pay less per unit than grid electricity from day one.
  • Price certainty — shielded from volatile wholesale energy prices.
  • Off balance sheet options — depending on structure (your accountant can advise).
  • Green credentials — real, demonstrable carbon reduction for ESG and tenders.

Funded vs buying outright

Buying outright gives the highest long-term return and full ownership — typical payback is 4–6 years and then largely free power. Funded/PPA gives no-capital access and immediate savings, but a lower lifetime return because the funder takes a margin. The right choice depends on your cash position, tax situation and how you value capital. We’ll talk you through both honestly.

Is my business a good fit?

Funded solar works best for businesses with high daytime electricity use, a decent roof or land area, and a stable, creditworthy trading history (funders assess this). Warehouses, factories, farms, care homes, schools and larger offices are typical strong candidates.
