A lot of people rule themselves out of solar before they even ask, because they’ve heard it only works on a big, south-facing, shade-free roof. That was closer to true fifteen years ago. Today, plenty of “imperfect” roofs make perfectly good solar homes — so before you assume yours won’t, here’s what actually matters.
South is best, but east and west are fine
A south-facing roof captures the most over a day, so it remains the ideal. But east and west-facing roofs perform very well too — often within a modest margin of south — and they have a hidden advantage: they generate more in the morning and evening, which is when many households actually use their electricity. An east/west split can line your generation up better with your usage than a single south array.
North-facing roofs
A purely north-facing roof is the weakest orientation and usually not worth panelling on its own. But many homes have more than one roof face — so if you’ve a north slope but also an east, west or south one, the good faces can still carry a worthwhile system. It’s worth an assessment rather than a flat “no.”
Shade is about design, not a dealbreaker
Shade — from a chimney, a tree, a neighbouring building — used to be a serious problem, because shading one panel could drag down a whole string. Modern kit largely solves this:
- Optimisers let each panel perform independently, so a shaded one doesn’t drag down the rest.
- Microinverters do a similar job, managing each panel separately.
- Careful panel layout simply works around the shaded areas.
The result is that partial shade is now a design consideration to engineer around, not an automatic reason to give up.
What genuinely does matter
- Roof condition. If the roof needs replacing soon, it’s worth sorting first — panels last decades and you don’t want to remove them for roof work later.
- Usable space. There needs to be enough unshaded, unobstructed area for a system that’s worth installing.
- Structure. A sound roof that can take the (fairly light) additional load.
The only way to really know
Rules of thumb only get you so far — your roof is specific to you. A proper assessment looks at orientation, pitch, shading through the day and across the seasons, and your actual usage, and gives you a realistic picture rather than a guess.
