Solar Panels for Gyms and Leisure Centres

How can we help?

Few commercial buildings work their electricity meter as hard as a gym or leisure centre. Pool pumps and pool hall ventilation run around the clock, air handling fights the heat thrown off by a busy gym floor, showers demand hot water from six in the morning until closing, and the lights stay on throughout. For operators facing tariffs that have never returned to pre-2022 levels, solar panels for gyms and leisure centres are one of the few levers that cut cost permanently. This guide covers where the savings come from, what payback looks like, and how a fully funded system can put an array on your roof without spending capital.

Why a leisure site’s energy profile suits solar

Solar pays best when the electricity is consumed on site rather than exported to the grid. Gyms and leisure centres are close to the ideal case, because their demand is both large and almost entirely concentrated in the hours the sun is up.

Opening hours do most of the work. A typical site trades from around 6am to 10pm, so the array generates into live demand for practically its whole productive day — not into an empty building.

Then there is the plant. Where there is a pool, circulation pumps run continuously to keep water turning over, and the pool hall’s air handling and dehumidification units run alongside them — often the two biggest electrical loads on the site by some distance. Add heat pumps or electric water heating for showers, saunas and steam rooms, and the base load never really drops.

The gym floor adds its own. Cardio equipment, studio lighting and sound, and the ventilation needed to keep a busy space comfortable all draw hardest at peak times, and those peaks — mid-morning, lunchtime, early evening — sit squarely inside the generation window. Cooling demand also climbs in summer, exactly when a rooftop array produces the most. The months that hurt your electricity bill most are the months solar does its heaviest lifting.

Leisure buildings tend to have the right roofs, too: large, simple, often flat or shallow-pitched spans over sports halls, pool enclosures and studios, with few obstructions and good solar access. That means a system can be sized around real demand rather than squeezed into leftover space.

Realistic savings and payback

For a commercial system designed around genuine daytime consumption, a 40–70% reduction in electricity bills is typical, with payback usually landing in the three-to-five-year range. After that the array keeps producing for decades — panels installed today are generally warrantied to still be performing strongly at 25 years.

Two factors sharpen those figures. The first is grid pricing: every unit you generate displaces one you would otherwise import, so the value of self-generation rises with tariffs. The second is battery storage. A battery banks surplus midday generation and releases it into the evening peak, when the gym floor is at its busiest and the pool plant is still running — lifting self-consumption instead of exporting cheaply.

We size systems from your actual half-hourly consumption data, opening hours and roof, not from a rule of thumb. A wet site with a 25-metre pool has a fundamentally different profile from a dry gym in a retail unit, and the design should reflect that.

The membership and funding angle

There is a commercial case beyond the bill. A visible rooftop array backed by real metered generation is a clearer environmental claim than any marketing line. For local authority leisure contracts, trusts and school-linked facilities, on-site generation also supports carbon reporting and strengthens tender submissions.

No upfront cost: the fully funded route

Many operators would rather invest in new equipment, changing rooms or a second site than in a roof. A fully funded arrangement solves that. A funder pays for the system and its installation, and you buy the electricity it generates through a power purchase agreement (PPA), typically at a rate below what you pay the grid. No capital outlay, and savings from month one.

DES delivered exactly this for Leek Town FC: a fully funded 46.8kWp array paired with 69kWh of battery storage, installed at no upfront cost to the club. The model transfers well to gyms and leisure centres, where large, predictable, year-round demand is precisely what makes a PPA work for both sides.

Experience with sport and leisure buildings

DES has installed solar across community sport and leisure sites, where changing rooms, floodlighting, hot water and long opening hours create the same sustained load. Our work at the Sixpenny Handley sports pavilion in Dorset is a good example of a community facility cutting its running costs, and we have delivered solar and battery systems for clubhouses including Leverstock Green FC and Felixstowe & Walton United FC. You can see more on our commercial solar impact page, or read our wider guide to commercial solar for UK businesses.

Why choose DES Renewables

DES Renewable Energy is a commercial solar installer based in Wimborne, Dorset, working with businesses across the South and further afield. Our installations are MCS accredited, and we hold NAPIT, RECC and City & Guilds qualifications — the credentials that matter for electrical safety, workmanship and consumer protection on commercial projects, and the ones funders and insurers look for.

We handle the whole job: site survey, system design, DNO application where required, installation and commissioning, scheduled around your opening hours so members and classes are not disrupted.

Find out what your site could save

The honest starting point is your bills. Our free business energy bill check reviews your current usage and costs and gives you a realistic picture of the savings and payback solar could deliver at your site — with no obligation.
