Solar Panels and EV Charging: Can You Really Charge Your Car for Free?

If you’ve got an electric car, or you’re about to, one question comes up more than any other: can solar panels charge it for free? It’s a fair thing to ask — charging at home already costs far less than public rapid chargers, and running your car on sunshine is genuinely appealing. Here’s the honest version of how it works, and when it actually adds up.

We install both solar and EV chargers, so treat this as informed rather than neutral. But the real answer isn’t a simple yes — it’s “yes, for a good chunk of your charging, if it’s set up the right way.”

Why it isn’t automatically free

Your panels only generate while it’s light. Most people charge their car overnight, when the panels are doing nothing — so by default you’d be buying that electricity from the grid like anyone else. The “free” part only happens when your car charges while the sun is producing more than the rest of your home is using. Line those two up and you’re charging on surplus solar you’d otherwise have exported for pennies.

How to actually charge on sunshine

There are two ways to get real free miles:

  • Charge during the day. If you’re home in the daytime — working from home, a second car that sits on the drive, weekends — you can charge straight off your panels while they’re generating.
  • Use a solar-aware charger. Smart chargers such as the Zappi have an “eco” mode that only draws your surplus solar, topping the car up gently as spare power becomes available rather than pulling from the grid. It’s the neatest way to capture free miles without thinking about it.

Better than exporting

Here’s the simple economics: sending surplus solar to the grid earns you only a small export payment, whereas using that same surplus to charge your car offsets electricity you’d otherwise buy at a much higher rate. So on a sunny day, putting spare solar into the car is almost always worth more to you than exporting it — which is exactly what a solar-aware charger does automatically.

Where a battery changes the picture

If you mostly need to charge in the evening or overnight, a home battery bridges the gap: it stores your daytime solar and lets you charge the car from it after dark, instead of buying peak-rate grid power. Solar, battery and EV together is where the economics get genuinely strong — you generate, store and use your own energy across the whole day. Who gets the most out of it

Solar-plus-EV pays off most if you’re home during the day at least some of the time, do decent mileage (more charging means more to offset), or already run your home on solar and want to squeeze more value from it. If you’re out every day and only ever charge at 2am on a cheap night tariff, solar will still help your household bills — it just won’t be doing much for the car specifically.

Doing it together vs separately

You don’t have to fit everything at once, but there’s sense in planning it as one system. An installer who does both can size the solar, position the charger and set up the smart controls so the whole lot works together — rather than bolting a charger onto solar that wasn’t planned with a car in mind.
