Solar Panel Maintenance: How to Keep Your System Performing

How can we help?

One of the best things about solar is how little looking-after it needs. With no moving parts, a solar system is about as low-maintenance as home technology gets. But “low-maintenance” isn’t “no-maintenance” — a little care keeps your panels generating at their best and protects your investment for the full 25–30 years. Here’s what’s actually involved.

Do solar panels need cleaning?

In most cases, rain does a good job of keeping panels reasonably clean. But over time dust, pollen, moss, lichen and bird droppings can build up — especially on lower-pitched roofs where rain runs off less freely — and that grime reduces how much light reaches the cells. Even a thin film cuts output, so an occasional clean pays for itself in restored generation. Panels near trees, farmland or the coast tend to need it more often.

Should you clean them yourself?

We’d generally advise against climbing onto your roof — it’s a safety risk, and harsh brushes or the wrong chemicals can scratch or damage panels and void warranties. A professional clean uses the right equipment, purified water and safe access. If you do want to freshen ground-level or easily reached panels yourself, use only soft brushes and clean water, never abrasive materials, and never walk on the panels. For anything at height, leave it to a professional maintenance service.

Beyond cleaning: the health of the whole system

Panels are only part of the picture. A proper maintenance check also covers:

  • The inverter — the hardest-working component, and the one most likely to need attention over the system’s life. Error codes or drops in output usually show here first.
  • Wiring and connections — checked for wear, corrosion or loose fittings.
  • Mounting and seals — ensuring fixings remain secure and weatherproof.
  • Your battery, if fitted — confirming it’s charging, discharging and reporting correctly.
  • Performance data — comparing actual generation against what the system should be producing.

Keep an eye on your monitoring

The easiest maintenance habit costs nothing: check your monitoring app now and then. Most modern systems report daily generation, and a sudden or steady drop is the clearest early warning that something needs looking at — whether that’s a dirty array, a shading issue, or an inverter fault. Catching it early avoids weeks of quietly lost generation.

Frequently asked questions

How often should solar panels be serviced?

A professional check every few years is plenty for most systems, alongside a clean as needed. If your monitoring shows a drop in output, it’s worth booking one sooner.

Will dirty panels really affect performance?

Yes — anything blocking light, from bird droppings to moss, reduces generation. It’s usually gradual, which is why regular monitoring and the occasional clean matter.

Do you maintain systems you didn’t install?

Yes. Our engineers are trained across all the major panel, inverter and battery brands, so we can service and repair systems fitted by other installers.
