Ground-Mounted Solar Panels: When Your Roof Isn’t the Answer

How can we help?

Solar panels don’t have to go on your roof. For properties with land to spare — or a roof that isn’t suitable — ground-mounted solar can be an excellent alternative, and in some cases the better-performing option. Here’s when a ground array makes sense and what’s involved.

What are ground-mounted solar panels?

Rather than sitting on your roof, the panels are mounted on a frame anchored into the ground — typically in a garden, paddock or field. Electrically the system works exactly like a rooftop one, feeding your home and, with a battery, storing surplus for later. The difference is purely in where and how the panels are positioned.

The advantages of going ground-mounted

  • Perfect positioning — panels can be angled and oriented for the ideal tilt towards the sun, rather than being limited by your roof’s pitch and direction.
  • No roof constraints — ideal if your roof is shaded, north-facing, small, fragile, or listed.
  • Room to scale — with space available, you can install a larger array to cover higher energy needs or an EV.
  • Easy access — cleaning and maintenance are simpler at ground level, with no working at height.
  • Better cooling — free airflow around ground panels can help them run efficiently.

Is your site suitable?

The main requirement is a reasonable area of unshaded land with a clear southerly aspect, within cabling distance of your property. We assess ground conditions for the mounting foundations, check for shading across the seasons, and confirm the run back to your consumer unit. Most domestic ground arrays sit under permitted development, though larger installations or sensitive locations can need planning permission — something we’ll guide you through.

Frequently asked questions

Are ground-mounted panels more efficient than roof panels?

They can be, because they’re set at the optimal angle and orientation rather than being constrained by your roof, and benefit from good airflow. The right choice still depends on your specific site.

Do I need planning permission for ground-mounted solar?

Many domestic installations fall under permitted development, but larger arrays or sensitive locations may require permission. We’ll advise on what applies to your site.

How much land do I need?

It depends on system size, but even a modest unshaded area with a southerly aspect can host a worthwhile array. A site visit gives you a clear answer.
