Are you feeling the pinch of rising energy costs every time you open your mail? You’re certainly not alone. As of June 2026, we’ve seen the Ofgem price cap fluctuate significantly, with confirmed rates of £1,641 in April jumping to £1,862 for the July–September period. And with ongoing Middle East tensions causing ripples in global wholesale markets, analysts at Cornwall Insight and uSwitch suggest we could see bills climb toward £1,930 by the end of the year.
It’s a lot to take in, isn’t it?
But there’s a silver lining. Installing a home battery system allows you to store your own "free" solar energy or top up using cheap overnight rates. The two heavyweights in this arena are the Tesla Powerwall 3 and the GivEnergy All-in-One. Between you and our team here at DES Renewable Energy, we’ve seen both systems transform homes across Dorset.
But which one is right for your specific needs? Let's break it down.
The Tesla Powerwall 3: The High-Performance Powerhouse
If you want the "iPhone" of the battery world, the Tesla Powerwall 3 is likely your first port of call. It isn’t just a battery; it’s a fully integrated energy system. As a Tesla Powerwall Certified installer, we’ve seen first-hand how this unit handles the heaviest loads without breaking a sweat.
The Powerwall 3 features a built-in solar inverter. This is the "brain" that converts the DC electricity from your solar panels into the AC electricity your kettle and TV use. Because it's integrated, you often don't need a separate box on your wall, making the installation look incredibly clean.
Why you might love it:
- Massive Power Output: It can deliver up to 11.04 kW of continuous power. That’s enough to run your oven, washing machine, and EV charger all at once.
- Whole-Home Backup: When the grid goes down, the Powerwall 3 takes over in milliseconds. Most of our customers don't even notice the lights flicker.
- Weatherproof & Robust: With an IP67 rating, it’s flood-resistant up to 70cm and can handle the salt air of Bournemouth or Poole with ease.
The GivEnergy All-in-One: The UK’s Value King
GivEnergy has taken the UK market by storm, and for good reason. They are a British-owned brand, and their systems are designed specifically for the way we live in the UK. The GivEnergy All-in-One (AIO) is their flagship response to Tesla.
While it might not have the same raw peak power as the Tesla, it’s an incredibly smart bit of kit. It uses a "Giv-Gateway" to manage your home’s connection to the grid, and it’s famous for its ability to play nicely with smart tariffs like Octopus Agile.
Why it might be the winner for you:
- Extended Warranty: GivEnergy offers a 12-year warranty, which is two years longer than Tesla’s standard 10-year term. (Just remember, you’ll need a quick health check service every few years to keep it valid).
- Open Ecosystem: If you’re a bit of a tech enthusiast, you’ll love their open API. It allows you to integrate your energy data with various smart home platforms.
- Great Value: Generally, the GivEnergy AIO comes in at a slightly lower price point than the Powerwall 3, often saving homeowners £500–£1,000 on a full installation.
Head-to-Head: The Technical Breakdown

Dealing with Power Cuts: Whole-Home vs. Essential Loads
One of the most common questions we get is: "Will my lights stay on if the grid goes down?"
The answer is yes for both, but the way they do it differs.
The Tesla Powerwall 3 is designed for "Whole-Home Backup." This means your entire consumer unit (fuse box) is backed up. If the power cuts out while you're roasting a Sunday dinner, you can probably finish cooking it.
The GivEnergy All-in-One typically uses "Essential Loads" backup. We usually wire it so your lights, fridge, and internet stay on, but we might leave heavy items like your hot tub or electric shower off the backup list to prevent the battery from draining too quickly.
Is one better? Not necessarily. It depends on whether you want "business as usual" during a blackout or if you just want to make sure you're not sat in the dark.
Smart Tariffs and Octopus Energy
We are an Octopus Trusted Partner, so we spend a lot of time helping Dorset residents set up smart tariffs.
If you have a Tesla Powerwall, you can access the Tesla Plan, which is a bespoke tariff designed to maximise your savings. However, GivEnergy is arguably the "king" of Octopus integration. Their software is incredibly good at looking at the next day's pricing on Octopus Agile and automatically scheduling your battery to charge when electricity is at its cheapest (or even when they pay you to take it!).
And if you're thinking about EV chargers, both systems can be set up to ensure your car is "charged by the sun," using only excess energy that would otherwise have gone back to the grid for pennies.
Making the Choice for Your Dorset Home
So, which should you choose?
Go with the Tesla Powerwall 3 if:
- You have high energy demands (Electric heating, multiple EVs, or large appliances).
- You want the most seamless, high-power backup experience available.
- You already own a Tesla car and want everything in one beautiful app.
Go with the GivEnergy All-in-One if:
- You want the best possible value for your money.
- You want the peace of mind of a 12-year warranty.
- You love the idea of deep integration with smart tariffs like Octopus Agile to slash your bills.
Choosing between these two is like choosing between a top-of-the-range Range Rover and a high-spec Volvo. Both will get you where you're going in comfort and style, but they have different strengths.
As MCS-approved and NAPIT-certified installers, our job is to make sure your choice is installed to the highest safety standards. We've written extensively about why these certifications matter, and we're here to guide you through every step.
