Home Solar Batteries Compared: Tesla, GivEnergy & Sunsynk

How can we help?

A home battery lets you store the solar energy you generate during the day and use it in the evening, instead of buying it back from the grid. But which battery is right for you? Here’s an honest comparison of three of the most popular systems we install — Tesla Powerwall, GivEnergy and Sunsynk — so you can see how they differ.

Specifications vary by model and change over time — we’ll confirm the exact options when we design your system.

Which battery is right for you?

There’s no single “best” battery — the right choice depends on your energy use, how much backup matters to you, your existing inverter, and how much capacity you need. The Tesla Powerwall is a great fit if you want large capacity and premium whole-home backup in one unit. GivEnergy suits those who like a flexible, expandable, UK-supported system. Sunsynk works well in flexible hybrid setups. We fit all three and will give you a straight recommendation rather than pushing one brand. For more detail on the Powerwall specifically, see our Tesla Powerwall guide. If your shortlist has moved beyond these three, we’ve also put Fox ESS and Growatt side by side on warranty small print, cost, capacity and inverter compatibility. We are also one of a small number of BYD approved installers in the UK, and you can see our first BYD battery and inverter installation, where we replaced an ageing inverter and battery on an existing solar array.

Battery chooser: answer 4 quick questions

A starting point, not a design — we confirm the right system at your free survey.

1. What matters most to you?
2. Roughly how much electricity does your home use a year?
3. Do you already have solar panels?
4. Any preference?

What a GivEnergy install actually looks like

Specifications only tell you so much. Here is one of our teams fitting a GivEnergy Generation 3 5kW hybrid inverter with a 9.5kWh battery, so you can see the size of the kit and where it ends up on the wall before you settle on a brand.

Do you even need a battery?

A battery isn’t essential, but it dramatically increases how much of your own solar you use — typically from around 40% to as much as 80%. It’s especially worthwhile if you’re out during the day, want backup power, or have an EV. To put a rough number on it for your own usage, try our solar battery savings calculator. Two longer guides go further than we can here. For the honest case either way, read do you really need a battery with solar panels?, which works through time-of-use tariffs, energy independence, backup during outages and future-proofing for an electric vehicle. If it’s the money you’re weighing up, battery versus no battery: which saves you more in 2026 sets panels alone against panels plus storage and shows where each set of savings actually comes from.
